Can crypto move from speculation to real-world utility?

Is crypto facing an existential crisis, or is it an inflection point that will guide the next phase of its evolution? The stunning collapse of FTX, one of the world’s biggest exchanges, has raised serious questions about crypto’s place in finance, trade and investment. At the same time, the underlying blockchain technology has proven resilient, attracting considerable interest for applications ranging from web3 and gaming to real estate, e-commerce, and payments.

With major regulatory changes on the horizon, the digital asset ecosystem is gearing up for wider mainstream and institutional adoption. But is it really ready for enterprise-level integration and daily, practical use by consumers? And what’s actually backing these assets?

Though the dust will eventually settle on the current crisis, the outlook is definitely mixed. To make sense of a muddled picture, the Financial Times, in partnership with Circle, will gather investors, financiers, corporates and thought-leaders at this private invitation-only meeting. Chaired by the FT, the event will explore the ascent of crypto and digital assets to this current crisis, the speculative hijacking of blockchain technology, and the outlook for the coming year.
